In this illustrated talk, professor Pritchard, a student of the late Munsee language holder Beulah Timothy, will offer interpretations of Munsee (*aka “Lenape”) placenames of Ulster County, and trace the westward migration of this expansive population by examining the surviving place names they left behind, scattered across the US and Canada. These names reveal probable migration routes by land and water, including portage routes. Pritchard will also touch on closely related Shawnee and Wappingers placenames as well.
